You can visit historic Crownhill Fort on the dates below. The Fort is privately owned and is not open to visitors at other times.

Saturday 18th July, 11am to 4pm, Grounds and Museums open to visitors

Crownhill Fort will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm with last admissions at 2pm. We suggest you allow at least two hours for your visit because there is plenty to see and do:

  • Explore the ramparts complete with amazing views over Plymouth and the surrounding areas as well as a complement of historic artillery.
  • Visit museum displays in recreated barracks depicting military life in the 1890s and 1940s
  • Meet the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre outreach team who will be exhibiting some of their enormous collection in Old Stables 3-6
  • Chat with our tour guides, volunteers and staff members. Learn what it takes to keep a Victorian Fortress in good order.
  • Join one of two guided walks through a rifle gallery and the North Caponier at 2.00pm or 2.30pm (see below)
  • Watch uniformed guides drill and fire a 19th century Field Gun at 3pm

There are no food or drink vendors at this event but you are welcome to bring a picnic, enjoy this in the Fort grounds and take the packaging home with you.

Advance tickets are on sale now and cost £5 for adults, £3 for those aged 5-15 inclusive and there is no charge for under 5s. Car parking, if required, costs £2.50 per vehicle and free parking is available for bicycles and motorcycles. Any unsold tickets will be available to buy on the day with cash only.

Thursday 27th August, 6pm to 8pm, Firing of the Moncrieff Disappearing Gun

Join us as we drill and fire the world's only operational Moncrieff Disappearing Gun. This unusual piece of Victorian Artillery was installed at Palmerston Forts in the 1880s and all known examples were removed from service by 1901. Our example was reinstated in the late 1990s whilst Crownhill Fort was undergoing restoration.

Participants meet in the Guardroom for a 6pm start. After an introductory lecture, uniformed guides will lead the group around the Fort visiting museums and ramparts en route to the Moncrieff Gun. The revolutionary mechanism will be demonstrated (there are opportunities for audience participation) before the Gun is loaded with a blank charge and fired over the terreplein. The evening will conclude by 8pm.

Tickets are limited to ensure everybody has a good view of the action. These are on sale now and must be purchased in advance. Admission costs £5 per person and car parking, if required, costs £2.50 per vehicle. Free parking is available for bicycles and motorcycles.
