Landmark Trusts abroad

Since the establishment of the Landmark Trust in 1965, two similar organisations have been founded to preserve and care for historic buildings in the USA and Ireland.

The Landmark Trust USA and the Irish Landmark Trust were both established in the 1990s and follow the model of heritage preservation set out by The Landmark Trust in the UK. Between them, the two organisations currently look after more than 35 holiday properties in Ireland and New England.

The Landmark Trust USA

Founded in 1991 and originally part of the Landmark Trust, The Landmark Trust USA has operated as a separate organisation since 1999. It continues building preservation work in America according to the model established by Sir John and Lady Christian Smith in the UK.

In its stewardship are five properties in Vermont, which include five beautifully restored historic properties and a working farm, representing a variety of architectural styles from 1802 to 1915 and each sleeping between two and eight people. Landmark USA’s best-known property is Rudyard Kipling’s Naulakha, the famed home where the author wrote The Jungle Book.

Landmark Trust USA properties can be booked through the organisation’s website.

Irish Landmark Trust

Operating under a similar ethos to The Landmark Trust but established as a separate organisation, the Irish Landmark Trust works to save historic buildings in Ireland that are at risk, and gives them new life by making them available as holiday rentals.

Founded in 1992, the Irish Landmark Trust has rescued more than 40 buildings over the last three decades, 33 of which are currently available to book for short stays. Their collection includes a number of lighthouses, gatelodges, a school house, country houses, and a restored mill. Read more at the Irish Landmark Trust website.
